SAN CARLOS

CONSIDERED THE GREATEST JEWEL OF SONORA. Many people have been amazed by the volcanic geographic contrast of San Carlos that blends with the turquoise waters of the Gulf of California, while abundant saguaros seem to raise their arms to honor this unforgettable place. Because of its spectacular scenery and abundant vegetation and marine fauna, San Carlos is without a doubt, one of the preferred favorite vacation destinations in Mexico. San Car- los is part of Guaymas Municipality and is located only 120 kilometers south of the state’s capital.

TETAKAWI HILL.

It is considered the the main symbol of San Carlos. This volcanic hill is 200 meters above sea level and is excellent for walking or hiking, of course, taking proper precautions. Contrary to what is commonly said, Tetakawi does not mean “goat breasts”, but “stone hill” in the yaqui language, due to its geological formations.

EL SOLDADO ESTUARY.

The State Government has de- clared this a Protected Natural Area. It’s an aquatic ecosystem home of 557 different plant and animal species. It’s one of the few estuaries that have three different kinds of man- grove (red, black and white), aside from being considered among the most important wetlands of Mexico. It’s located 5 km east of San Carlos. Conciencia y Educacion Ambiental, A.C., an ecological organization based in this area, offers guided tours. An appointment is needed. Ph. 01 (622) 224 2672. EL SAHUARAL.

This place holds dozens of impressive cactus that measure up to 8 meters high, making them worth seeing. These giants of the desert need over 500 years to reach their actual height and can be found at San Jose de Guaymas.

NACAPULE CANYON.

It’s an exotic ecosystem located in the middle of the desert, where it is possible to observe special flora and fauna. Thanks to its accidental topography and weather, this microhabitat holds water holes, palm trees, cactus, nacapule trees and serves as an important refuge for some species during summer time. CAÑON DE LAS BARAJITAS.

Located only 19 kilometers from San Carlos, this is the perfect spot for relaxing surrounded only by sand and water.

PIEDRAS PINTAS BEACH.

An attractive refuge for those who wish to enjoy themselves away from the crowds. It’s an excellent place for camping, diving or snorkeling.

LOS ALGODONES BEACH.

Sand dunes that look like cotton balls gave this place its name. This pristine beach is ideal for horseback riding, camping or water sports throughout the years thanks to its warm waters.

SAN PEDRO NOLASCO ISLAND.

The perfect spot for diving, snorkeling and watching thousands of sea birds. It is located 40 minutes by boat north of the main bay and is possible to make friends with dozens of playful sea lions that dive during the expedition. There are several places in San Carlos that offer guided tours on a regular basis throughout the year.

SAN CARLOS GOLF CLUB.

There are two first-class marinas that offer shelter to any kind of ship: the Marina San Carlos (considered the largest natural marina in Mexico) and the Marina Real. With or without a ship, spectacular sunsets are a must see in these areas.

REGIONAL FOOD.

San Carlos has several fine cuisine restaurants. There is a great diversity of places where is possible to enjoy everything from delightful gourmet dishes to fresh sea food at one of San Carlos’ many palapas.

WHALE WATCHING.

The fin whale, second largest animal on earth, is a common resident of the California Gulf, and with luck can easily be spotted from the coast. Playful dolphins and sea lions are commonly observed along the bay.

WATER SPORTS.

Aside from the exclusivity of playing golf, water sports like beach volleyball and football are perfect to practice in San Carlos. San Francisco Bay or the popular Tecate Beach are some of the best spots.

ENDLESS FUN.

After sunset, energy still goes on. San Carlos offers many options to blast: bars, nightclubs, lounges... for all kind of budgets and interests. Best places in town are 1910, Aqua Bar, Tequilas and El Bronco Restaurant.
