Founded in 1930, Puerto Peñasco was a fisherman and adventurous people village and, even if nowadays this city is a top- level tourist destination, it keeps the traditional feeling of an old fishing port. This is the most popular meeting point for locals. On this beach it is easy to rent kayaks, bananas and sailing boats, as well as to obtain a diversity of handcrafts.
This is a great bay of fine sands, sprinkled by calm, low-deep waters. The perfect place for water motor sports or simply swimming, it is also great for camping. Main water sports tournaments take place in this zone, where the best tourist complexes are located.
Landscaped residential complex in which kayaking, sailing and kite surfing are a must. Thanks to the dramatic tide changes, it is possible to ad- mire thousands of marine species in the so called “pozas de marea” (or tide pools) when the tide goes down. SPLASH! It is undeniable that the attractions of this port are beach and water sports, because of the countless tourist operators that rent kayaks, sea doos, offer scuba diving, sport fishing, boat and bananas rides. These services can be found at Sandy Beach, Playa Bonita and Calle 13.
CALLE 13 (13TH STREET).
This popular and old fashioned street also known as Tijuanitas (small Ti juana) shelters a wide diversity of restaurants, most of them Mexican, bars, pubs and a fascinating nightlife.
Besides having the best quality fresh seafood restaurants, this port has exquisite Chinese, Italian, Japanese and, of course, Mexican food restaurants. There are endless coffee shops and bistros to visit.
It is the favorite meeting point for rocaportenses. This recently remodeled walk is surrounded by restaurants, handcraft shops and other stores. This is where Luis Donaldo Colosio’s Plaza and an impressive sculpture of a fisherman, representative of Puerto Peñasco, are located. Most of the popular festivities are held here, like the well known Cinco de Mayo Festival.
An extraordinary motorcycle rally (Rocky Point Rally) takes place every November and it lasts no less than 4 days. American, Canadian and Mexican participants compete in motorcycle bowl- ing, darts and low-speed motorcycle races, in which the last to arrive is the winner. It is an extraordinary sight to see with thousands of motorcycles around the city.
PIRATES ON BOARD.
A tradition in Rocky Point is to follow the pirate’s boat Rey del Mar (King of the Sea) crossing the bay every evening. This antique ship offers music, dances, food, and lots of fun on board. Ph. 01 (638) 383 5490.
EL PINACATE BIOSPHERE RESERVE AND GREAT ALTAR DESERT.
It is one of the main natural attractions of Puerto Peñasco as well as of Plutarco Elias Calles and San Luis Rio Colorado municipalities. An area that shelters over 300 impressive volcano craters and an extensive region of gigantic mobile dunes. The El Elegante Crater is the most outstanding volcanic formation of the re- serve, which is 1,400 meters wide and 140 meters deep. It is possible to visit the reserve with a prior permission; also camping in two different sites is permitted. This mar- velous place is located on Km 52 on the Sonoyta-Peñsco Highway. SAN JORGE ISLAND.
Located one hour by boat from the coast, this is the best spot for bird watching, sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. This island is considered as one of the main areas for the reproduction of sea lions in Mexico. In Puerto Peñasco there are tourist operators that offer guided tours.
Located on the west side of the port, it is formed by a rocky peninsula that, that is at the base of a monumental hill and shelters, shelters a rustic and picturesque village. This place stands next to a gigantic estuary where it is possible to collect mollusks and other small sea species.
This is an educational space that exhibits manta rays and sea turtles among other marine species, some endemic to the Gulf of California, besides interesting information about the behavior of different marine ecosystems. CEDO (OCEANS AND DESERT RESEARCH INTERCULTURAL CENTER).
The Oceans and Desert Research Intercultural Center is a place dedicated to the research and knowledge of the north side of the Gulf of California and the Sonoran Desert. It promotes the preservation of the natural resources. This center offers lectures about natural history and has an aquarium open to the public, as well as field adventures offered by experts to ecosystems such as tide pools, estuaries and desert habitats. Designed for all terrain vehicles, this important race track is where major contests take place. The racetrack is located 5 Km North of Rocky Point, on Sonoyta’s Highway.
Puerto Peñasco has three professional golf courses in the city, an also has a putting green at Casa Blanca, within the Sandy Beach area.
